Nurturing the Next Generation of Rugby Talent in the North-East
As a seasoned rugby professional, I’m thrilled to share the exciting news about the recent coaching and skills development clinics hosted by Aberdeenshire RFC. This community-driven club has been a pillar of rugby excellence in the north-east of Scotland, and their latest initiative has taken youth development to new heights.
Apex Rugby Academy Leads the Way
At the heart of these clinics is the Apex Rugby Academy, a renowned organization committed to providing young players with high-quality, accessible opportunities to elevate their performance. Apex Rugby Academy has quickly established itself as a driving force in Scottish youth rugby, and its partnership with Aberdeenshire RFC is a testament to their shared vision of nurturing the next generation of talent.
The first-ever Apex Rugby Academy camp, held in July 2021 at Deeside Rugby in Banchory, Aberdeenshire, attracted over 150 young rugby players from across Scotland. This overwhelming response underscored the demand for specialized coaching and skills development in the region.
“Whilst all rugby was on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, we noticed a concerning impact on young people’s overall well-being,” explains Craig, the founder of Apex Rugby Academy. “With limited playing and training opportunities, there was a unique chance to press the reset button on youth rugby in Scotland and create a high-quality learning environment where young players could take their performance to the next level.”
Addressing the Need for Individualized Attention
The Apex Rugby Academy recognized an important gap in the traditional team-based training sessions. Young players were not getting the dedicated time and expertise needed to refine their individual skill sets. To address this, the academy hosted its first skills clinic in August 2021 with Scottish Rugby’s Skills Coach, Pete Horne.
“This was a concept that had never been introduced in Scotland before,” Craig continues. “Since then, we have run skills clinics with over 30 professional rugby players and engaged with more than 1,250 young rugby players from across the country.”
The success of the initial rugby camp in July 2021 prompted rapid expansion, with Apex Rugby Academy now hosting holiday camps in over 13 different locations, including Aberdeen, Hawick, Strathaven, Linlithgow, and Glasgow.
Aberdeenshire RFC: A Hub of Rugby Excellence
Aberdeenshire RFC has been a long-standing pillar of the local rugby community, with a rich history dating back to 1875. The club’s commitment to player development and community outreach has made it an ideal partner for Apex Rugby Academy’s clinics.
“Aberdeenshire RFC has been a crucial part of the north-east’s rugby landscape for decades,” shares James, the club’s vice president. “We’ve always recognized the importance of investing in our youth, and the Apex Rugby Academy clinics have been a fantastic way to provide our young players with world-class coaching and skill-building opportunities.”
The clinics hosted at Aberdeenshire RFC’s facilities have been a resounding success, attracting aspiring players from schools and clubs across the region. The energy and enthusiasm radiating from the pitches have been palpable, as the participants dive into drills, game simulations, and one-on-one feedback sessions led by experienced coaches and former professional players.
Developing Well-Rounded Rugby Athletes
The Aberdeenshire RFC clinics go beyond just on-field skills. The programs also emphasize the importance of overall player development, addressing key areas such as strength and conditioning, nutrition, and mental wellness.
“It’s not enough to just hone their technical abilities,” explains Fraser, a former Glasgow Warriors and Scotland international who has been heavily involved in the clinics. “We want to equip these young players with the holistic skills and mindset to thrive, both on and off the pitch.”
Sessions on injury prevention, recovery techniques, and strategies for managing stress and performance anxiety have been well-received by the participants and their families. This comprehensive approach ensures that the next generation of rugby talent in the north-east is primed for success, both in the sport and in life.
Forging Connections and Community Engagement
The Aberdeenshire RFC clinics have become more than just skills development opportunities – they have become hubs of community engagement and camaraderie. Players from different schools and clubs have come together, fostering new friendships and a shared love for the game.
“It’s been incredible to see the way these young players have connected with each other,” says Ewan, the head coach of Aberdeenshire RFC’s senior men’s team. “They’re not just learning rugby – they’re building valuable life skills, like teamwork, communication, and resilience. That’s the true power of these clinics.”
Beyond the playing field, the clinics have also strengthened the bond between Aberdeenshire RFC and the local community. Families have rallied around the events, volunteering their time, cheering on the participants, and engaging with the club’s broader initiatives.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Rugby Stars
The Aberdeenshire RFC clinics have already begun to bear fruit, with several young players from the region being selected for district and national representative squads. This is a testament to the program’s ability to identify and nurture exceptional talent.
“We’ve always been proud of the role Aberdeenshire RFC has played in developing top-level rugby players,” James adds. “Names like Jason White, who captained the Scotland national team, are a testament to the quality of rugby education we provide. These Apex Rugby Academy clinics are taking that legacy to new heights.”
As the north-east’s rugby landscape continues to evolve, Aberdeenshire RFC and the Apex Rugby Academy are poised to lead the charge, inspiring the next generation of rugby stars and strengthening the sport’s foothold in the region. With their unwavering commitment to player development and community engagement, the future of rugby in the Granite City and beyond looks brighter than ever.
