Developing Rugby Handling Skills: Drills for Enhancing Ball Retention

Ball Handling Fundamentals in Rugby

As a seasoned rugby professional, I know that effective ball handling skills are the foundation upon which all other aspects of the game are built. Whether you’re a forward or a back, your ability to securely catch, pass, and retain possession of the ball will be a key determinant of your team’s overall success.

At the heart of strong ball handling are a few core fundamentals that all players must master. First and foremost is the grip. Players must learn to consistently control the ball with their fingertips, maintaining a firm but not rigid hold. This allows for maximum dexterity and responsiveness when passing or fending off defenders. Proper hand positioning, with the thumbs along the seams, is crucial for ensuring a secure, reliable grip.

Body positioning is another crucial element. Players should be balanced, with their weight evenly distributed and their center of gravity low. This provides a stable base from which to receive and pass the ball, even when under pressure. Footwork is also key – players must be light on their feet, ready to pivot, sidestep, or change direction at a moment’s notice.

Rugby Ball Retention Strategies

Beyond the fundamentals of grip and body position, truly skilled rugby players develop advanced techniques for securing and protecting the ball. When carrying the ball, players must keep it tucked into their body, using their non-ball-carrying arm to create a “ball pocket” and shield it from would-be tacklers. The ball should be carried high and close to the chest, with the elbow tucked in to prevent it from being dislodged.

In contact situations, players must learn to “fight for the ball” – driving their legs, keeping their head up, and using their free arm to fend off the tackler. The key is to maintain control of the ball throughout the tackle, either by absorbing the impact and retaining possession, or by offloading the ball to a supporting player.

Skill-Building Drills for Improved Ball Handling

To develop these critical ball handling skills, rugby coaches must incorporate a variety of targeted drills into their training sessions. A great place to start is with simple passing and catching exercises, where players work on their technique, timing, and communication. Drills like the “Gauntlet” – where players pass the ball down a line, with the receiver having to move to receive it – are excellent for building fundamental handling abilities.

For more advanced players, agility-based drills that incorporate evasion and change of direction can be hugely beneficial. For example, the “Zig-Zag” drill, where players weave through a series of cones while maintaining control of the ball, challenges their footwork, ball security, and decision-making under pressure.

Possession-based games, such as “Keep Ball” or “Touch and Pass,” are also invaluable for honing handling skills. These small-sided games force players to make quick decisions, protect the ball, and execute accurate passes – all while under the scrutiny of defenders.

Advanced Rugby Handling Techniques

As players progress, they can begin to explore more sophisticated ball handling techniques. Offloading the ball in the tackle, for instance, is a highly valuable skill that allows teams to maintain continuity of possession, even when met with strong defensive pressure. Mastering the one-handed catch and pass, meanwhile, can provide an additional dimension to a player’s skill set, enabling them to distribute the ball in confined spaces or when on the move.

When carrying the ball into contact, skilled players will also learn to “present” the ball to the defense, keeping it high and close to their body, ready to either recycle possession or offload to a supporting player. This takes tremendous body control, core strength, and situational awareness – attributes that can be developed through a combination of targeted drills and game-realistic training.

Coaching Approach to Developing Handling Skills

As a coaching professional, I firmly believe that the key to developing world-class handling skills lies in adopting a progressive, player-centered approach. New skills should be introduced gradually, with players given ample opportunities to master the fundamentals before advancing to more complex techniques.

Consistent, targeted feedback is also essential. Coaches must be vigilant in identifying areas for improvement, and provide clear, actionable guidance to help players refine their techniques. This might involve breaking down the mechanics of a particular skill, or using visual aids and demonstrations to reinforce best practices.

Equally important is the need to incorporate handling skills into game-based scenarios, allowing players to develop their decision-making and problem-solving abilities under realistic pressure. Small-sided games, conditioned matches, and live-contact drills all offer invaluable opportunities for players to apply their handling skills in dynamic, ever-changing situations.

Integrating Handling Skills into Rugby Training

Developing world-class ball handling skills is a multi-faceted endeavor, requiring a holistic approach to player development. Effective training programs must weave handling drills and exercises throughout the entire training session, from the warm-up to the main session to the cool-down.

During the warm-up, for example, players can engage in simple passing and catching routines, or dynamic ball-carrying activities that get them moving and mentally engaged. The main training session, meanwhile, should feature a balance of skill-focused drills, possession-based games, and full-contact scenarios that challenge players to make split-second decisions and execute under pressure.

Ultimately, the goal is to create an environment where handling skills become second nature – a seamless extension of a player’s overall game. By integrating these elements throughout the training process, coaches can help their players develop the confidence, adaptability, and game awareness required to thrive in the ever-evolving world of rugby union.

As the coaching staff at Aberdeenshire RFC, we are committed to providing our players with the tools and guidance they need to take their handling skills to new heights.
